Dinner Theater

We had our first meeting to plan the dinner theater/rehearse our lines tonight. I (Jessica) am extremely proud of our students; most of them were early, and they all came up with AMAZING ideas of how to execute the par-tay, and how to make it just a fun evening for everyone involved. I sent an e-mail out to all you parents with a few more details that I don't want to spill here, but here is a link to the rehearsal schedule. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 6:15-8:15 PM. We will not rehearse the Wednesday before Easter, or the Wednesday before the show. However, please note that we will have a long rehearsal on Sunday, May 1, to set up the sanctuary for the show, and have a dress rehearsal.

I have also added all rehearsal dates to the Google Calendar, as well as adding information about what is to be prepared at each rehearsal. (If you can't see the rehearsal links in "Month" view, look at "Agenda" view.) I will update our Google Docs space with flyers you can pass out to friends, etc, once those things are finalized.

Rocky Mountain Dates

Rocky Mountain High is July 23-27. We will leave church on the 22nd and return on the 28th.

Money ($295) and paperwork is due to me NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 7. Last year I was a little lenient on dates, but I can't be this year because if we're late, we delay the church that we're teaming with in Iowa.

Download registration forms here and turn in pages 5 & 6. Leave the church name space empty on page 5, and list me as your contact. If you need my number, send me an e-mail or just leave it blank and I will fill it in.

Make checks payable to the church. If you have a financial hardship, please don't hesitate to talk to me or Kevin; we want you to go if you want to go.

I'm working on making the site a little bit cooler. The biggest thing I'm trying to figure out is the music player at the bottom of the page. Thus far, there are only 2 songs loaded because I'm still trying to figure it out. And all of the songs I would LIKE to have on there I can't find links to. Anyway, if you have any requests of what to include, let me know. Otherwise, I hope you'll be patient while I figure all of this out. =)

West Virginia Mission Trip -- Thoughts

Hey everyone, it's Jessica. I'm sitting here in my bed on Saturday morning, the day we leave this beautiful place, watching the sunrise and thinking back on this past week. I know you heard these comments before, but I wanted to get them down on paper (so to speak) so that others can read then and so that we'll be able to remember this trip in the future.

1. This place is BEAUTIFUL. Don't forget how amazing this place is... up here on this hill with more hills surrounding it. This morning as the sun rises, there is fog everywhere off in the distance, making it even more amazing. Remember driving through those hills. Remember sitting on the deck and seeing how vast and glorious God's creation is.

2. We started this journey as 16 people -- 10 kids, 6 adults. The kids were seemingly split 6, 2, and 2. But then you got to know each other. You started to understand each other and each other's nuancees, what made each other tick and what made each other excited. You started branching out and talking to other people -- other groups, even! I am so proud of you about this, because it's so easy to just stay in the groups we know and are comfortable in, but you made an effort not to do that! I know all of us leaders are incredibly impressed with that.

3. Not only that, but you worked HARD this week. And you worked as a team. You learned your strengths and weaknesses and you learned how to play off of those. As we went canoeing, I saw you become good communicators. It's hard to canoe ten miles down a river with rapids -- but you did it and you had fun!

Guys, this was a great trip and I really hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. I can't wait to come back here and enjoy this place again.

Youth Sunday Thoughts From Jessica

I want to give thanks to all of the kids who worked crazy hard on the youth service yesterday. You were all amazing and I appreciate how hard you've worked. I had several people thank me and Jerome for the blessing of you guys, but inr eality, *I* want to thank *YOU* for being you! God has truly blessed me (and, I'm sure I can speak for all of the leaders when I say US) with a great group of "kids." We teach you week after week, only by the grace of God, but the truth is that we also learn a lot from you. I know that I'm loving leading you. I am loving watching you grow in faith. I am loving watching you become amazing young adults. I love you all and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for how hard you worked. I know that you were the presence of Christ to everyone at church yesterday, just like you are in my life everyday.

30 Hour Famine

OK, so the Famine is March 12-13. Here are some activities I think would be fun:

December Second Saturday

WE WILL BE DOING THIS ACTIVITY ON SUNDAY INSTEAD OF SATURDAY.

December's activity will be ice skating, pizza, and Journey to Bethlehem.

We will meet at church at 3:45 with plans to leave at 4. We'll be skating at the rink in Old St. Charles in Frontier Park. We'll stay there till about 6, then head to Pizza Street off of Veteran's Memorial and then wrap up our evening at Harvester Christian's Journey to Bethlehem. I would imagine we'll return to church around 8 or 8:30. Cost for skating is $9.00 ($6.00 for admission, $3.oo for skate rental) and any money you'd like for concessions. Pizza Street is $4.49 without a drink, so count on around $6 or $6.50 if you don't plan on drinking water. Journey to Bethlehem is free, so you should bring around $16 total, not including concession money.

November Second Saturday

Yesterday we went and helped sort food items brought in by the Boy Scouts for Scouting for Food at Fish Center.

Before the food got there, Sue showed us around the facility and told us about how the referral process works. Around 10:30 the food started coming in. Here is a shot of the room before we started sorting:

Meet Angel

Angel is our World Vision child. I got the packet today in the mail with his photo and address. Here is his photo and some information about him.

Angel Ruben lives with his parents and 1 sister. His parents struggle to provide for the family. His father is an agriculture worker and his mother is a babysitter. Despite their efforts it is difficult to meet the family's needs.

Angel Ruben is growing up in a poor rural community in the Latin American country of Ecuador. A typical family home is constructed of sun-dried bricks with a thatch roof. The community survives mostly on homegrown vegetables, wheat and barley. Temperatures rise only to the mild 70s and fall to a low of 41 degrees in this cool climate. Dry and mountainous best describe the local terrain.

Angel Ruben is in primary school and he enjoys drawing. He helps at home by running errands. He likes to play soccer. He is in satisfactory health.

Your sponsorship commitment will help provide Angel Ruben and his community with improved health and nutrition as well as educational opportunities. In addition, adults will receive agricultural training that will enable them to provide better for their children and raise their overall standard of living. Through Christian witness, these precious families will have the opportunity to learn more about the love and grace of God.

30 Hour Famine

In the past we have participated in 30 hour Famine -- a day to fast and help us remember those around the world who go without food. It has always been an amazing day that we have dedicated to having fun and serving the community while remembering all of God's people who are not as blessed as we are.

This year, in 2010, we will be having our 30 hour Famine as a Second Saturday activity in either February or March. Maybe even April, so the weather is nice and our service project might possibly be something outside.

Anyway, check out the website here and let us know what you think you might want to do for it! We're interested in making this YOUR Famine, so any and all input is valuable! We're also looking for a student or two to help us manage the activity, as we're combining Revolution and Equilibrium together to do it.

Born Again

Last week, we had a "Happy Birthlife!" party. We were celebrating our newfound lives in Christ. Before our cake, we discussed what it really meant to be "born again." In today's day and age the term "born again" has been used to simply refer to Christians. But... what if it's more?

Being born again is more than the rituals of Baptism and publicly professing your faith. It's about living. In Romans 12:2, Paul urges us to turn away from the ways of the world and be transformed. That transformation is more than just turning away from your old life. Think about what a transformation is -- a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, for example. It's a complete change from what -- who -- you once were.

That is what being born again means.

If you've ever dealt with babies, you know that as a new life, they are learning everything -- how to talk, how to walk, how to feed themselves, how to dress themselves. There are brand new brains in those heads, absorbing everything around them, incredibly impressionable. And as those children grow older, they make mistakes, and hopefully learn from those mistakes to continue on.

As children of God, I can assuredly tell you that you will make mistakes. Especially if you don't turn to Him for advice and leadership. Just as you runt o your parents for help, you have to learn how to run to Him.

Below is a song by Third Day called "Born Again." In the second verse, they sing that this life is only the beginning. And it is! Don't forget about the riches that God has in store for us when we finally make it home to Him!!

All About Jessica and Jerome

We are a newly married couple with a love for Christ and a passion from Him for youth. We were married on March 14, 2009, and are loving life. We have one cat named Paulie:

...and a borderline insane amount of CDs. Jerome started our CD library when he was still single and, quite frankly, it's only gotten worse since Jessica came into the picture. The Christian music genre is what originally brought them together, and now it's one of the things they are known for.

Ask any of them anything about most Christian artists out there, and they probably know it and own the CD.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum we'll be using this year is See, Believe, Live: an Inductive Study of the Book of John by Barry Shafer.

Published by Zondervan, it is part of a series called "Digging Deeper." We hope to use the other books in the series as well. It is a twelve-session study diving deep into the book of John, helping students to "see the real Jesus, understand and believe his truths, and live the life he calls them to."
